Epidendrum cristatum is an epiphytic orchid that inhabits humid montane forests from Mexico to the Andes of South America. It develops erect stems and clusters of green to yellowish flowers, whose labellum features a characteristic crest that gives rise to its name. It blooms primarily between late spring and early summer. As a member of cloud forests, it forms part of epiphytic communities and offers floral resources for various insects, contributing to the diversity of these ecosystems.

Care
Keep this orchid in a spot with bright, indirect light or soft morning sun. It prefers intermediate to cool temperatures, between 12 and 28 °C (54 to 82 °F), and ambient humidity of 60 to 80%, accompanied by good ventilation. Watering should allow the substrate to approach dryness between applications; in warm periods, it usually requires 2 to 3 waterings per week, while in winter, the frequency can be reduced depending on environmental conditions.
For healthy development, grow it in a very airy and excellent-draining substrate, such as a mix of pine bark, charcoal, and perlite, or mounted on cork in high-humidity environments. Apply a balanced orchid fertilizer at a quarter or half strength every 2 to 3 weeks during active growth, reducing fertilization in winter. A good balance of humidity, ventilation, and light will encourage abundant blooms and vigorous growth.
