A spectacular large orchid with elegant flowers and a fascinating natural relationship with ants that captivates any collector.
The Myrmecophila galeottiana is a large epiphytic orchid native to southeastern Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala, where it inhabits seasonally dry tropical forests and warm coastal areas, growing on trees exposed to high light levels. This species develops robust, hollow pseudobulbs, characteristic of the genus, which in nature can house ant colonies in a remarkable mutualistic ecological relationship. It reaches between 60 cm and 1.5 m in height, considering its long floral inflorescences. In our garden, it blooms from late winter to spring, producing numerous flowers in shades of pink, purple, and white that stand out for their elegance and duration. In addition to its ornamental value, it participates in complex ecological interactions with pollinating insects and ants, contributing to the biodiversity of the tropical ecosystems where it thrives.
Care
Care
Myrmecophila galeottiana requires moderate to abundant watering during the growing season, allowing the roots and substrate to partially dry between applications. In warm climates, it typically needs two to three waterings per week, drastically reducing the frequency during colder months, as it is adapted to environments with winter dry spells. It is recommended to fertilize every two weeks during the active growth phase with a balanced orchid fertilizer, applied at a low concentration. It should be cultivated in baskets, mounted on cork or wood, or in pots with a very well-draining substrate based on coarse bark, charcoal, and materials that promote excellent root aeration.
It thrives best with temperatures between 20 and 32 °C, tolerating brief drops to approximately 15 °C if kept dry and well-ventilated. It prefers ambient humidity of 60 to 80% and constant air circulation. For vigorous growth and abundant blooms, it requires very bright light, including a few hours of soft morning or late afternoon sun, avoiding only intense midday sun in extremely hot regions.
