Prosthechea fragrans is a medium-sized epiphytic orchid native to southern Mexico and other tropical regions of the Americas. Its pseudobulbs support leathery leaves and inflorescences with small whitish flowers, accented with purple hues and accompanied by a sweet, spicy fragrance. It blooms primarily in late winter and early spring. As an epiphytic species, it contributes to the plant diversity of tropical forests.
Care
Care
Prosthechea fragans requires moderate watering, allowing the growing medium to nearly dry out between waterings. During active growth, it is recommended to water 1 to 3 times a week depending on temperature and ventilation, reducing the frequency in winter. It benefits from light fertilization every two or three weeks with a balanced orchid fertilizer, applied in low doses. It should be grown in a well-draining medium, preferably composed of pine bark, charcoal, and materials that promote root aeration.
It thrives best at temperatures between 18 and 30°C, and prolonged exposure to temperatures below 12°C should be avoided. It prefers relative humidity of 60 to 80%, accompanied by good air circulation to prevent fungal problems. Ideal lighting is bright and indirect, although it tolerates a few hours of gentle morning sun; adequate light will promote more abundant blooms and vigorous pseudobulbs.
