It is a terrestrial plant endemic to western Mexico, especially distributed in dry tropical forest areas and rocky slopes in the states of Jalisco and nearby regions. It forms an attractive rosette of rigid, arched leaves that can reach between 80 cm and 1.5 m in diameter at maturity. During its reproductive stage, it develops a spectacular, large, erect inflorescence, generally between late spring and summer, with showy bracts that provide high ornamental value. In addition to its landscape appeal, this species contributes to the ecological balance of its habitat by providing floral resources for pollinating insects and other organisms associated with seasonal tropical ecosystems.
Care
Care
It requires moderate watering, allowing the substrate to partially dry out between applications. During the warm season, it can be watered once or twice a week, while in winter it is advisable to space out waterings to avoid excessive moisture. It responds favorably to light fertilizations during spring and summer with a balanced slow-release fertilizer or diluted monthly applications. It should be grown in a very well-draining substrate, preferably with a mix of coarse sand, volcanic gravel, bark, and light organic matter.
Its ideal temperature range is between 18 and 32 °C, showing good tolerance to heat and short periods of drought once established. It prefers environments with moderate humidity, between 40 and 70%, and excellent ventilation. For compact growth and optimal coloration, it is recommended to grow it in direct sunlight or very intense light, avoiding only prolonged exposure to frost or temperatures near freezing point.
