Rhododendron Vireya 'Festive Bell'

Rhododendrons thrive in moist soils rich in organic matter. However, their fine, shallow roots are damaged by excess water, so it is important that the substrate drains well. These types of plants prefer acidic soils, with a pH between 4.5 and 6.0. Approximately half of the substrate should be organic matter. It is recommended to incorporate sphagnum peat moss, pine or fir bark chips, compost, and shredded dry leaves into the soil. Oak leaves are excellent for growing rhododendrons. A layer of organic mulch between five and seven centimeters deep around the base of the plants helps retain moisture and control weeds. Rhododendron roots are very shallow (found at about 30-60 cm deep) and the root zone can dry out during warmer months. Therefore, rhododendrons should be watered more frequently during these months, especially in the first year after planting, when the roots have not yet grown out of the original root ball to spread into the surrounding soil.
